Thanks for all the kind words guys, I am delighted with the car. It is in amazing condition for 31 years old.

Hi Kees, do you want to put the car on the Alpina Archive?

Update. I have been delving more into the realms of the E21 Alpina. I did not know there were so many variants early on. I thought they were all A4 models. From what i gather now, the car is actually an Alpina A1/3. I am trying to find production figures on them now.

Yes there was three variatians of the car made by Alpina, two carbed versions and one fuel injected. They also had some American conversions done on 320i's by the old American Alpina distributor Hardy and Beck.

You can go to E21.net and look at Jereons Alpina page. He has some production numbers on the 320's, but Alpina didnt start keeping track of the E21's until 78.

There were 5 versions of the E21:
A1
A2
A4
C1 2.3
B6 2.8

The /3 behind the engine type denotes that it's the 3-series version of the originally BMW 02-series engine.

The A1/3 has 120hp and regrettably not even Alpina seem to know how many A1/3 engines they built. My guesstimate would be several hundred. Complete A1/3 conversions like your car with engine + suspension(?) + interior will likely only have been a few dozen at most.

I think he was referring to the 4 cylinder models.
