I know we've had this discussion for the E24/E28 cars, but does anybody have the Bilstein numbers on the earlier E12/E24 Alpina/Bilstein shocks and struts? I'll be sending a set of Sports into Bilstein for rebuild, and if I could get them rebuilt to the Alpina spec, that would be all the better. However, I believe I need the correct Bilstein part number off the shock to give them, yes?

Mike you will need the number that is stamped into each strut and shock. This is the valving specs that Bilstein will need. Alpina Part numbers will not get you the valving specs as I have found out from Bilstein NA. There is a disconnect between Bilstein NA and Bilstein Europe
Here is the contact #/name for help at Bilstein with this. Let us know if you get anywhere.
I am trying to do the same thing on my E28 Alpina suspension. I have the shock/strut numbers but not the original Alpina strut/I have original Alpina Shocks.
Here are the E28 numbers:
Alpina # 31.31.628 (Front) valving stamp #6420238W001 or 3180238W000 ????? This needs verification
and
Alpina # 33.52.614 (Rear) valving stamp # 3480810W001 This is verified
Yes, I know, I thought I was clear that I needed the Bilstein numbers off the shocks themselves. In any event, it should certainly be clear now to anyone else (who hopefully has the answers?).
And a note to anyone who at least has these shocks in their cars - the rear numbers you should be able to read off the shock with it mounted in the car. The fronts are another story obviously.

Hopefully, Frank Haas will chime in. He's got a couple of E12 based cars.

I understood you completely Mike. I just can't help you with E12, sorry. Again the Bilstein number is stamped into the shock and the strut. If it is Alpina provided, it will also have the Alpina number and the Bilstein number stamped into the body of the shock/strut. I will tell you that on a E28 you can not see the number while mounted on the car, unless you are a contorsionist. The link I provided is for E24/E28 which by most every account is the same part number. And again here is the Bilstein part # 3480810W001 for the shocks. But forget putting this number into the Bilstein part number finder on the website.......

I have a set of the rear e12/e24 rear bilsteins that I had for sale at the swap meet at SESF. They were pulled off of one on my old cars and definately need to be rebuilt. I will see if I can find them. Everything is still boxed and in the trailer as I have not had time to do much since SESF and I am just recovering from having pins removed from a few fingers (long story).
Ok, I found them. The #s on them are: 61901414648 and the other is 61901414692. These were off of an 80 model 635 that went to Alpina for additional tuning when new. It left the dealer with Alpina appearance items (wheels, steering wheel, dead pedal and shift knob) as well as the complete suspension kit. It then went to Alpina for further mods including engine work, front brake upgrades and spoilers.
When I got the car the left front strut and wheel were damaged and I replaced the shocks and struts with bilstein HD components. These shocks are in need of rebuilding and have been in storage for almost 15 years. One feels correct but the other has very little resistance or rebound but does not show any signs of leakage.
Would I sell them? Yes. How much? Make an offer. Why did I save them? I could not bring myself to throw them out and I had a place to store them.
I sold the fronts a few years ago to someone who was buying some of the Alpina parts that I had listed on ebay. One was bent badly but I guess he was doing basically what you intend to do.
