Hey guys!

Want to share my yesterday-night experience with my BT on German Autobahn A52 headding from Düsseldorf to Ruhrgebiet.

While me and the car were at relaxed 110km/h with cruise-control doing all the work, a light-grey 335i Coupe (D-JE 1009) passed by quite rapidly.

As soon as I realised it to be a 335i (thanks to second exhaust-tip on passengers side), I put my pedal to the metal and hunted after the BMW. Luckily, he got into traffic, so closing up took less than a minute.

After the car in front of him had switched to the next lane we had about 30km with very few traffic. We both floored it as hell and I was very surprised by the good performance of that 335i meaning that until end of my 4th gear (248km/h) it was a VERY VERY SLIGHT advance for me and I managed to overtake him easily only by hitting 5th-gear at ~ 250km/h, where he must have been slaved by his electronic-speed-limitation.

Though I have won this drive-by, I am asking my self if a) the 335i in general shows such good performances, b) if this was a chip-tuned 335i or c) if something with my BT is wrong.

To start back to front: yes, my BT is a quite high-mileage-car (~ 220.000km), but a very well serviced one (thanks to Frank Sonneborn). Also I have "on-Autobahn"-meetings with other powercars such as E46 M3, Audi RS4 V8, Audi RS6 V8, Porsche Cayman S, Porsche 996 convertible, AMG CLK 55 "DTM" and AMG SL 55, where I could directly compare my BT`s performance...and it performed quite well, especially regarding to the RS4`s :M5launch:

So it might have been a chip-tuned-335i I battled. If it was so, it was a real sleeper, because it looked abolutely bone-stock, including "335i"-badge...most chip-modded cars have also some other sporty-stuff being put on. As I read on German forum www.bmw-treff.de, the chief-engeneer of our BT, Mr. Noelle (noellemotors.com), offers 360HP and 520NM to the 335i by chip-tuning...this performace-data occurs quite familiar to me... hmm, why...:lightbulb: oh, sure, its the same as my BT has!!! This would explaine the duece in Autobahn-performance perfectly, but if a car is chip-modded, isn`t it also unlimited in top-speed? Or is getting ridd of the speed-limiter an extra option?

IF this was a bone-stock 335i, BMW offers the proud owners A LOT more power than the 306HP/400Nm written in the sales-brochures! Quite well done job and really strong runner. By the way: can someone provide a gearbox-diagram of the 335i? I would like to know if it has shorter gear-ratios than my BT. Attached the BT-gearbox-diagram for you!

335 is a fast car,, really fast

AND,,,,,,, there is 15 year old diferrence in technology,, so :typing:

but all dynotest i have seen they show 335i has more power than oem figures

((330+ ps but nm-> tq..???))

anyway,,,,,, i think the BT will pull away from the 335 on highspeed .. slowly ofcorse

The engine of the 335i puts out more horsepower than advertised. As Ferrari-BMW has posted, closer to 330 than 300 PS. That was probably a stock 335i.

A chipped 335i with speed limiter removed would be faster than a stock BT. If you have a modified BT however, then it all depends on your mods...

Interesting that the design principle of the 335i is EXACTLY the same design principle of the BT engine. The FIRST parallel turbo of an inline BMW 6 cylinder engine using short exhaust manifolds to feed two small, low-inertia turbos (instead of a single large turbo).

That is one reason why the 135i is such a kick-@ss car! The same engine in the 335i in a smaller, slightly lighter and shorter wheelbase car. What will GhostRider do with that? :)

135 is QUICK oem ,, but a friend of mine who is working @ BMW tried once a 450-470 ps DEMO car from BMW (((oem BMW ))) and he was sprinting against a F360
and said,,, You SHOULD SEE the face of the Ferrari driver when i slowed down and let him pass me :hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:

another info,, The TURBO manifold from N54B30 is a direct fit on S50B30/B32

Ok, so it seems that it had been a stock 335i.

@Ferrari-BMW: yes, I also heared of BMW-experimental-versions of 135/335i with 4xxHP! I appreciate, that BMW put the 3-litre-BT-engine into the smallest shell they produce. Would have been even better, if the 1-series-coupe (135-shell) looked more like the 2002tii-touring with round taillights and a shorter back (more combi-coupé than coupe-shape).

What engine is behind the S50B30/32-code? Sorry, I am not into the BMW-Engine-codes! Only know the M30 and the N54. Thanks!

@puppypildrim: no, my BT is STOCK! As it is my daily-drive best possible reliability has most priority...therefore I didn`t went into modding my BT yet.

EUROMODEL only........... S code is for engine in M///-cars
oem E36 M3 3.0L and 3.2L ,,,,,,,,,,Z3 ROADSTER + MCOUPE also have S50 3.2L

The USA E36 and Z3 have S52B30///B32 that is a similair block+piston as ALPINA use in their cars ... but USA S52 engines don´t have throttle-bodies like EURO models and the HP figure is not as high.. but peformance up to 100 mph is similair,,, on high speed the EURO engine is much more healthier:hihi:

ALSO this ........ USA S52 engine is one of the best engine from BMW to turbocharge w/aftermarket turbostuff,, here in Europe this is a popular option if you are going to blow your engine ;)

If I lived in Europe, I would mod. my BT. But being in British Columbia, Canada, there really are no highways where I can engage in highspeed driving without extreme punishment by law. I also drive my BT all year round so reliability is important to me. If I lived in Alberta on the other hand...

Puppy, believe me, driving with 300+++ km/h on the speedometer is quiet fast... even nowadays... even on holy German Autobahn! And owning a car coping that speed is sufficient in 99%. Sure, there is allways something faster, no matter what car you drive, but mostly it`s theoretically.

I don`t know how traffic-rates are where you live, but in my area traffic-rate is very high, additionally nearly all Autobahns have speedlimits between 80-120km/h, as most of Germanys holy Autobahn are limited in that speed-range meanwhile. So now you get my idea of "theoretically"...nearly no chance to flat out whatever is under the bonnet of your ride.

off-topic: you got a nice BT! White is very big since a year in Germany...had been the opposite for at least 15years or so. My Porsche is white, too. And I like the sleeper-look of your BT without badges/stripes...clean-machines rule!

@ferrari-bmw: thanks for explaining engine-codes. So the US-M3-E36-engine is good for aftermarket-turbo-/supercharging...ok. That makes me thinking of an 24Valve-B10-biturbo-Engine: ok...hmhmnhm, get a metal-cutter, check, hmhmh, get a welding-machine, check, hmehehem, widen engine-bay by half a meter, check.... :lightbulb:eek:uich:typing::applause::M5rev::M5thumbs::M5launch::byee55amg:trophy_bronze::15:

kees,

It should be even more solid now since I replaced the entire front suspension (except for Alpina springs) and the entire steering linkage including sway bar bushings and end links!

I did a good drive the other night after leaving my friend's house which had a Murcielago and 360 Spyder F1 and I was going pretty good. Those after run water pumps were working double time!

I have a 2017 340i Touring and it is really quick. It weighs about the same as my BiTurbo but has the advantage of an 8-speed ZF gearbox which allows me to keep my foot all the way to the floor. In the BT I have a clutch and a slow changing 5 speed manual and a 25 year age gap in technology. That said, the BT feels more brutal in-gear. The wave of torque is much more noticeable than in the 340 which is a very linear train by comparison.

Cheers!
