3.0 CSL Alpina B2-S 1972

Dear all,

As already mentionned last time, I will now keep you posted about car restoration with this (new) thread. Please forgive me but I do not have time enough to upload ALL the pictures from the beginning (Day I bought the car etc...). This, I will see later if it will be possible

I flew to Germany (where the car is being restored) last weekend and I am happy... Very good progress Front and rear axle are OK, Bilstein suspension is OK (Unfortunately, they did paint the parts yellow - although I very clearly asked to paint the new parts black - and put blue "hats on the rear shocks... (in the end actual Bilstein colours... not 1972 colours...). Now too difficult to paint black on the special Bilstein yellow paint... I will see if the yellow area is very visible behind the wheels/tyres when these will be on the car... But I think I will have to live with this small anachronism). All chrome trim is OK, Lamps are OK, doors are OK, doors windows and rear quarter plexiglass windows as well (windscreen and rear window will be done today ) etc... etc... Very good progress done... I think next time we should have pictures with the engine in ... etc... (September ?)

Absolutely stunning work Yannick......I would not worry too much on the yellow - but now would be the time to repaint black if it bugs you too much...I know where your head is at with this......on the originality factor.
I think I saw a identical colored 3.0 CSL in this months Roundel mag from a recent show in Germany. Turbos, etc classed together - museum quality cars.......car was sold for unknown amt.
Enjoy your project - who is doing the restoration in Germany for you? Fabulous work...

Hi GAlpinaOwner,

Indeed, I am disappointed because the yellow paint does not 100% match the originality aspect. Please note I asked Bilstein (where the whole chassis has been overhauled) to paint the parts black as in they did in the seventies on street cars

In the end, I cannot really blame them that much : I know they now paint ALL their shocks in this yellow / blue combo.. Tha's life.

You're anyway right : should it bug me too much, I will have them removed and paint black.

Stunning! Thanks for posting the ongoing project.

Could you provide some background on the history of the car? How you found it, etc? Often makes for very interesting stories too.

You're right Kees And this car indeed has a very interesting story (very early period of its life)...

This, I will reveal after project completion and once I will have got "official papers" from Buchloe

Looks great Yannick. Are you going to leave it in Germany once its finished, or does it go back to France with you?

Danny,

importing and registering an Alpina in France really is a pain in the neck However, your question still remains valid and my problem is not solved yet. Actual scenario is : After project completion, this car will first be registered in Germany, ''official'' owner will be a friend of mine. Reason for this ''German stay'' mainly is that I want car papers done at Alpina in Buchloe testifying the car is a genuine B2-S delivered at Alpina in 1972 etc... with complete description. This obviously can only be done in Germany. Once the car will have German papers, my friend will sell me the car. I will be the new ''official'' owner.

Next step (easy way) would be to import it to France and register it as a BMW 3.0 CSL with ''normal'' BMW 3.0 CSL papers (should not be that difficult, this I've already done). Other step (very hard way) would be to import it to France and register it as a BMW 3.0 CSL Alpina B2-S. This last way, I very honnestly think it will not be possible.

On the other hand, I would not have a big problem letting the car under my friend's name in Germany and drive it with German plates (I just will have to care about insurance and such kind of stuff). Future will tell.

How are your B6 pojects going on?

Sebring NL,
sure I will drive the car. As other cars in my modest collection, I do not drive them that much (500km - 1000km /year ?) but I drive them. To me, the real challenge is driving them very rarely but keeping them in the ''as new as possible'' condition. As I am anyway ill and definitely paranoid
(I do not drive them when it rains, I only drive them during summer time...), I am rather successful in my challenge

Sounds complicated. Im sure you will get it figured out. You can always send it over here and I will take good care of it for you.
I have actually started completion on the green B6. Its in the paint shop right now, and should be finished by the early part of next week. Next it gets new brakes all the way around, and the decals and spoilers added. I just returned from the bodyshop and its looking good, all bodywork is done, and its getting the final prep for paint.
I'll probably take another 6 month break before starting the red one. The red one is a basket case, it needs a complete engine compartment disassembly, so Im not sure Im up to that task at the moment.
That being said, it is nice to have my garages full of finished cars, so Im sure I will start sooner than later.....
