2004 Cannonball One Lap of America

I just got back from the 2004 Cannonball. The event covered 5000 miles, and was scored at 17 timed events, mainly at race tracks (see www.onelapofamerica.com). The Gault Autosport (www.buybmw.com) M5 performed flawlessly. We scored 1st in luxury car class, 10th overall, and top BMW.

The M5 turned some great numbers - 13.1 seconds on a slippery drag strip, and 0.975 G on the dry skidpad at Tire Rack. I want to thank my sponsors, Gault Autosport, IMR Test Labs (www.imrtest.com), BMP Design, Supersprint, and H&R amoung many others. Note that we run for a children's charity, and make a substantial contribution every year (we have run the event for 13 straight years).

The car was set up with stock 9.5 inch wheels all around, Mich. PS2 tires, full Supersprint headers, X-pipe, and mufflers (stock cats). The custom H&R suspension was great, allowing neutral handling at the many race tracks. Nothing trick was done to the motor, just a homemade cold-air kit, K&N filters, and a heavy duty Sachs clutch from BMP.

Thanks to the excellent M5 board, I also got many good tips from reading the posts.
