MAH,

You can avoid sales tax by buying in Oregon - but only for the duration of a temporary registration. Max is, I think, 90 days. If you try to set up a local address for permanent registration, as soon as you register the car, Oregon will insist you get a local driver's license or prove to DMV why you should have a license from another state (i.e. Oregon is not your permanent residence). You'll pay sales tax when you register an OR car in CA.
