Maybe the E31 was a successor to the E24, but it surely wasn't a replacement. It's all about the definition of the term 'successor'.
If it stands for something that follows up and is somewhat similar, then maybe. But the 8 series has been developed from scratch and nothing to do with anything BMW has ever built and - as it looks at the moment - will ever build.
BMW themselves deny any influence of other models, so the E31 officially is a kind of its own.
