Supposedly the reason they did this is because the new SMG transmission in the M3 is that way.

They did it to keep it all consistant and prevent anyone from down shifting the SMG when they meant to upshift.

The steptronic protects misshifts better than the SMG beacuse it is not as aggressively geared as the SMG transmission.

Its just the story I heard so dont hold me to it. I dont really know enough about either of the two setups to make any sort of knowledgeable conclusion on my own.
