I don't believe that BMW has changed the wheel coating process at all. But, I also don't understand the problem. If you clean your wheels every time you wash the car, and DON'T USE ANY ACIDIC PRODUCTS on your wheels, they should be fine for a long, long time. Mine are. Only a very small number of rock chips and the valve caps rubbed on them (at speed, due to the factory rubber stems I used to have) and wore through the finish.
If you have little black specks of whatever (I have them from time to time), use muratic acid ... BUT, DO ONE SPOT ON THE WHEEL AT A TIME, AND IMMEDIATELY DOUSE THOROUGHLY WITH WATER.
