I don't know how running at relatively low RPM could be bad for the gearbox. I can see it being bad for the engine IF at that RPM it was lugging, but the M5 engine is relatively tractable and can usually pull without protest from around 2000 RPM. So long as the engine isn't lugging or knocking at the RPM you are running it at, it shouldn't hurt anything.
